Morning Rituals

It was Monday morning again. Brent stared at his face in the mirror. He had let his beard start to grow over the week-end, but it didníŽt look like much of a beard yet. It was at an ugly stage. Besides, he didn’t really want a beard. He knew he would get tired of it and have to decide when to shave it off. He got out his razor and gave himself a close shave. Afterwards, he rubbed his jaw between his fingers and thumb. He liked the feel of smooth skin just after a shave. He stretched his neck and splashed on some after-shave lotion. It smelled fresh.

He grinned at himself in the mirror to inspect his teeth and noticed that they were looking yellow again. He really should give up smoking. It made his teeth look terrible, not to mention what it was doing to his organs, especially his lungs. He twisted the cap off the toothpaste tube and squirted some toothpaste out. He mixed a pinch of baking soda into the squirt of toothpaste and polished his teeth with it. After brushing, he spit the toothpaste into the sink. He smiled at himself in the mirror again. That looked better. He tried to forget what color his lungs must be.

He looked down and saw that his stomach was sticking out. He tried sucking it in. That looked better, but he knew that if he stepped on the scale, it wouldn’t tell a lie. He had definitely put on some weight recently and would have to do something about it. He would either have to lose it, or swallow his pride and buy pants with a bigger waist. He wished he were tall and thin like his father. Why did he have to take after his mother!

Well, that was enough of the morning ritual in front of the bathroom mirror! The smell of coffee drew him to the kitchen. He poured himself a cup and sat down with it at the kitchen table. He swallowed a mouthful, enjoying the taste as it washed down his throat. The day always looked better after he had had his coffee.
