An Entertainer in the Park

A man walked through the park playing an enchanting tune on his whistle. It was a tune that all the children had come to recognize. They promptly left the swings and slide that they were playing on to gather around and see his string of magic tricks.

He entertained them with one trick after another. The man was a famous magician, but he often performed informally in the park. It was his special treat for the children. It was free; they did not have to buy a ticket to attend. He put on a splendid program. Although he also performed more formally for money in theatres, he preferred the enthusiasm he found in children in the spontaneous setting of the park. It was refreshing. He enjoyed it when they whispered to each other as they tried to figure out how he had done a trick. Adults too often have lost that sense of curiosity.

When his program was done, he picked up his instrument again and played the tune that now identified him.
