When Relationships Turn Sour

One day I got a phone call from my girlfriend. ˇ§Sheila!ˇ¨ I said, although I knew it was Dana. She was, of course, offended that I had mistaken her voice for that of another woman. My silly joke invited trouble into our relationship.

I intended to tell her that there was no Sheila — that I was just joking, but she wouldn’t listen. I tried to persuade her that I was now telling the truth. I tried to apologize, but she interrupted me. She requested that I not see her or phone her for awhile. She needed some time to think. So we split up. I knew then that I’d made a terrible mistake.

I still see her sometimes, but our relationship has become shallow and polite. She asks about my parents, and I say everyone is fine. We pretend that everything is okay, but I feel a strong urge to take her in my arms and kiss her. My precious Dana! I’ve lost the one I treasured most.
